Harness Building and Refurbishment Information

So... Your wiring harness is frakked. You are tired of the headlights going out on the back roads in a curve, the turn signals don't blink half the time, the Hazards lights NEVER work, and WTF is up with that Amp Meter? Finally the significant other says get the heater working, or find another mate. Hmmm... well maybe you can let the heater go, but you have to fix the other problems right? ;-)

Well, you have come to the right place. Here is what I offer:

  1. I'll sell you parts/wire/connectors to repair your own harness (see links to parts to the left)
  2. I can build you an all NEW complete harness set (for 1962 to 1971 FJ25/40/45 only)
  3. I can POSSIBLY (PLEASE read full description below under Refurbishing your OEM harness) refurbish your OEM harness for trucks built after 9/1971 (10/71 to 83). .

What I cannot do is build you a wild custom wiring harness... Read on...

Custom Harnesses

What's a custom harness? Basically if it is not OEM, it will be custom. Got a GM 5.3L V8 but with no engine control harness? That's a custom harness. Got a Cummings 2.8L diesel? Custom harness. Want to use all Auto Meter gauges? Custom harness... Basically I build mostly OEM harnesses. I don't have your truck in front of me to be able to do quality custom work, and guessing where things are, and how they are supposed to work, with no ability to test it, just doesn't work for me, or you.

Don't panic though, there are some things that I can do to help if your truck is not 100% OEM. Send me an email to fj40coolerman at gmail dot com detailing exactly what month/year truck you have, what is not OEM, and what you want to do. I MAY be able to help.

Here are some things I CAN do:

  1. Add wiring to support the Dakota Digital gauge clusters.
  2. Support for changing from the F to a 2F engine all years
  3. Support for changing to a different alternator or moving the alternator to the other side of the engine
  4. Support for changing to a different ignition system. (DUI, FJ60, or later FJ40 style)
  5. Taillight conversions (from round to three way 1974 and later tail lights)
  6. Need to tow something? For 1974 -1983 I can build you a stand alone Powered Tow Harness with a three wire to two wire converter built in. For your 62 to 9/1973 FJ25/40/45 I can add a tow connector to the rear chassis harness when it's built. No converter needed.

Why can't I build you a NEW main cowl harness for anything built after 9/1971???

Beginning in the 1972 model year (10/71), Toyota started using “unique to Toyota” wiring connectors for various things. These connectors, and in some cases the terminals that go in them, are simply no longer available new. Examples are the fuse block connectors, voltage regulator, Hazard switch, some rear chassis connectors, and all the emissions related stuff. I, and several other people, have scoured the globe trying to locate a cache of these unique connectors to no avail. They were made for Toyota, and no one else, so there is no stock anywhere. That one thing prevents me from building new OEM harnesses for trucks built after 9/1971.

Refurbishing Your OEM Harness

What I can do for you, (IF the main harness is in good shape, is not covered in heavy grease, undercoating or spray paint, (takes too much time and effort to clean), and it has not been in a fire, or had a major meltdown in the charging circuit, (again takes too much time to repair a major meltdown), is to refurbish it. This involves completely un-taping the harness, soda blasting all the connectors to remove light dirt and tarnish, inspecting the harness for damage, making a list of everything that needs replacing, repairing it, fully load testing it, and finally taping it back up with modern non-adhesive harness tape. Note: Unless a connector is damaged, it is NOT replaced just beacuse if may appear faded or discolored. Same for exposed wire. If it is brittle, it is replaced, but otherwise it is simply cleaned. I try to keep these refurbishments as OEM as possible. If new wire has to be spliced in, the splice is done INSIDE the main harness, not outside, so that no evidence, (beyond the new wire and connector), shows on the outside. I use the same splice crimps Toyota used, but I do cover them with heat shrink, not tape like Toyota did.

Sub-Harnesses

I do not do this refurbish service for ANY sub-harness, (like the rear chassis harness or the wiper harness), they are always too degraded to repair. Those harnesses are built new from scratch. Note that I can build new rear chassis harnesses for any later year, provided the owner has the OEM connectors on the harness, and they are in good enough shape to clean up and re-use. (I can also use aftermarket connectors on the tail light section of the rear harness as the tail lights that are available now either have no connectors, the wrong connectors, or have the correct OEM connectors, but the correct mating rear chassis harness connector is no longer available or has been lost. In most cases I have to have the new tail lights sent to me for re-wiring with the aftermarket connectors.)
